Please note that this is all done with version 3.3 of the Wii system version. Doing the recent update to 3.3E will cause you problems.
The big news is that the backup loader no longer needs dvdx. The installation is much simpiler. If you already are using the homebrew channel you’re 90% done. Next on the news list is that you no longer need to decrypt Wii images. This new version will play both 1:1 backups in addition to discs made from the backup-creator from the inital release. The last thing I want to mention is that it loads fast and a lot of bugs have been fixed. Mario Kart Wii ran perfectly for me and I no longer noticed slow load times.
If you followed my tutorial for setting up the initial release of the wii backup loader then all you need to do is download the new backup launcher and add the two apps, Backup_Launcher and cIOS_Installer, to /apps on your sd card. After that, run the cIOS_Installer and then launch a game with the Backup_Launcher. I was able to use cIOS_Installer without uninstalling anything and it worked perfectly the first time.

Hopefully this new update will enable us to play copied ‘cube games, given that the ISO dosen’t need modding it looks hopefully. I’ll give it a shot and if it works I’ll still up a post to let ya’ll know about it.
Thanks this keeping us updated about this stuff, and gathering the info together in one easy spot. You done good : ) and have made the hack asseciable to thouse of us who get confused by all of this (I’m not even sure that the CIOS realy is!)

Darkest Wolf: it doesn’t work with gamecube games. Right now there’s no way to play gamecube games on a Wii from copied discs without a mod chip (you can use the Gecko SD device, though). It would be nice if someone could figure out some way to do that but the gamecube mode on a Wii works totally differently so it’s really a separate problem.
Just FYI… I used a patch to get the IOS51 and updated Wii Shop channel (these two items are most of what was changed in the new patch from Nintendo) working while keeping all the homebrew and the backup loader working. If anyone is interested in that, let me know and I’ll put up a short tutorial. My Wii now has Homebrew Channel v.9, Backup Loader v0.3, Wad Manager 1.21 and the Homebrew Browser all working together happily. Everything works together great, just DO NOT update your Wii through the wii system menu or you will be in a world of hurt.

Anon: Shame about the lack of Gamecube compatibility, doubt it will be patched, bit dated by now I guess, fingers crossed though.
I can add my confirmations to thouse of others, but saying that this works perfectly, took along time to get the ISO I wanted, but everything else has been smooth sailing, congrats to Wiigator and that other guy (Who’s Alis I forget) It’s a little slow, but why complain when it’s free. And thanks to Atkins for grouping all the info together.
This works very well! Much better loading times. I’m just curious how I can uninstall the cIOS (it’s only a cIOS installer, not uninstaller?). The tutorial about updating the system sounds interesting… (please also mention what to do with installed channels (beside HBC))
This update is soooooo simple to use now. I just softmoded my neighbors wii.
This is for a non softmoded wii with Homebrew Channel installed.
1. Download http://wiinewz.com/forums/nintendo-news/70404-wufe-wii-update-file-extractor.html and copy to your SD card’s apps folder.
2. Pop in a recent game(few months… I used Wii Fit) and then launch WUFE from the Homebrew channel (Follow on-screen instructions)
3. When done rename IOS36-64-v1042.wad.out.wad on your SD card to IOS36-64-v1042.wad
4. Download http://wiinewz.com/forums/nintendo-news/73082-custom-ios36-rev-06-a.html
5. Copy the .dol file from the zip in step 4 into a new folder in your SD apps folder (mine was SDCARD:\apps\CIOS Installer\boot.dol)
6. Run the CIOS install from the homebrew channel and follow on screen instructions.
7. Copy the boot launcher to the apps folder.
8. Run the boot launcher to load games.
Step 7’s boot launcher is linked in the original post up top.

Help i dont have internet on my wii how can i install the new CIOs
Will this run games from any region? I.e. I have an american wii, so will I be able to play a PAL image? If not, will a region changer homebrew program solve this problem?

Thank you for the knowledge. I had the same problem that all the other people had. I figured it out after reading the pass several times. Also the backup-creator is not needed if you already have the iso just do as the doc says. : )
What exactly happens if you try to update the wii?
update if you already have iso nero burn works at auto speed. If you have a ntsc region wii then get ntsc iso. the region is why the game will display black and white I do belive.

One question… not updating to the 3.3e update stops me accessing the wii shop channel, and seems to be stopping me installing the Mario Kart channel (And I have been unable to find a WAD for it, so not much else I can do, unless any can offer some help)
If I use the “Wii Shop and IOS51 installer” to install the hacked ios51 and enable shop channel access, will this destroy the changes made by the new cIOS? Is it lightly that the next cIOS (It must need updating at some stage) will include the nessisary changes, to allow shop channel acess (The hacked ISO51 apparently only 4 lines of code differnt to the real IOS51, so getting these changes in to the next cIOS version should be easy… right?)

somehow i slowly get a bit concerned about that update thing… im planning to softmod mine as well, but i already updates to 3.3… does that mean im not able to crack my wii? and do i have to reinitilize to get rid of that update, or’ll be there another way round that?
and do i have to burn the b.u.l as on utube smetms shown or is a sd enough?
If you already did the system update from Nintendo and still want to get in to the hacking goodness, there is a tutorial over at WiiNewz which has most of the software and instructions you need. I’ll try to write out some additional instructions and host the new software sometime this weekend.
This is the nuts credit to those people who have too much time on their hands and spend it wisely doing great things like this. I’m sure it wont be long before a chip is a thing of the past for the Wii. Keep the great work going or until your spare time runs out…!!!!
hi if i do the soft mod can i still play my original games like normal by just putting them in and playing from the main menu
i have recently purchased a wii the version i have is 3.3u will installing homebrew channel and this backup loader cause me any issues with version i currently have?

actually i have it fully installed now.
Trying to load the new Bond game just after the strap warning it comes up with an error is this going to be some thing that will become the norm with all new games. I think that the companies are putting code in to the games to search out if it is a softmode or not. Any one else have any comments on this..?

i have a wii 3.3u and the homebrew channel installed on my wii, however i can’t install any cios or downgrade, i can’t use dvdx like the guide states, you can’t use the backup launcher on 3.3u it’s only the twilight hack beta 1 that works and the emus, but no backup launcher or loader works cause you need to install cios and on 3.3u you just can’t install then i read a guide that states you can but it’s bogus i tried everything unless someone can tell me how to get this working nobody will be able to run the wiigator backup launcher 0.3 with new cios , can you help me firgure this out or do i have to keep seaching forums with bogus answer

i have a new problem… i cant install my hbc. ive got the new one from NeoMatrixXx, the easyinstaller.
i took it after i tried for over two hours the regular way. but in any case my wii tells me after startin twilight hak, that my wii didnt find any elf or dol data on my sd and is hanging. i thought about downgrading wii, but it appears as i only can do it if i have already hbc installed. so how the hell can i get rid of my prob? i formatted my sd several times. but its no use… HELP
itsme dont downgrade!! your almost there! u have to put the .dol file that came in the homebrew channel download in the root dir of your sd card and rename it boot.dol. when its “hanging” its looking for an app to run and it looks in the root folder for a dol file. for example if u had a emulator .dol file in root, itd run that(you have to remember to rename it boot.dol). So just make sure u have the homebrew channel .dol in root but rename it boot.dol, run the twilight hack and you should be good.

I have a Wii with 3.3U firmware installed. No Modchip. I have installed the Twilight Hack, Homebrew channel beta 9. and added Backup Launcher .03 to my SD card. The backup launcher will load as well as Gheco OS both give the same message, they wont detect the DVD. I was able to run the CIOS installer with Backup loader .03
I was unable to install DVDx it gives the error -2011 and the same for when i try to update to the latest CIOS wad. I have the latest wad in the /Wad folder and the boot.dol in /apps/CIOS/boot.dol.
I am having the same problem as Victoria. but for some reason it doesn’t recognize my backups. I have tried Originals in the loader and works fine. I burn my isos at low speed and have tried them patched and unpatched with Imgburn and other burner software.
My questions are:
Does DVDx need to be installed for the Backup Launcher .03 to rechonize backups?
Is it because of the latest Firmware 3.3u that prevents the update of DVDx and updating to the latest CIOS.wad, if so why was i able to install the CIOS installed with Boot loader?
and most important, How do i fix this? or must i wait for a new update.

@luckdog: thx but im already this far and it still wont work! name in my rooz is boot.dol, but its still searching. im getting kinda pissed off cause everybodys gettin it startin but me. am i this retarded or may be there some other reason? cant be that hard!

is it ok if when i choose the hacksave the aimingcross rushes down to the lower end of the screen with the lightconfig before start and gets stuck? the game loads normally, but then i walk backwards and the hack appears. during the process it hangs. im really at the end of knowledge, cause i wandered 100 of forums, and everyone made it but me…
just in case: my wii is PAL and 3.3E, my hack is “twilight-hack-v0.1-beta1″ and my hbc is “the_homebrew_channel-beta_9″. my sd is from sandisc and takes 2 gig.
ok, i found my problem. i now downloaded “tetris party” and renamed it boot.dol. then it finds the .dol and reads the sd. and then it says: exception occured.
what the hell am i supposed to do now? it just hangs AGAIN!

guys i made it! u probably should give some advice to the next one haveing probs, like for e.g. us 7-zip instead of unrar…. rar messes it up. that was my problem the whole time *thumbs up*

this is for you lot who have the 3.3 on your wii like i did. victoria and xboxlenny you said that nothing will work like dvdx and stuf like that. this is becouse you have 3.3 on your wii here is a file you can download from the piratebay.org its call (3.3 frimwear fix with iso16-64-v257-prod.wad) when you download seed it for more to use thanks you will see i lefted a message on it so you know this s.h.i.t is for real.when downloading has finished unrar it with win rar go to the reedme file on it and it tells you what to do. then all you need then is the downgrader 1.1 just google it. downgrade your wii thats if you do 1a do that but i think it fixs the 3.3 but i did the downgrade anyway.

This was the solution. I downloaded the 3.3u fix patch from piratebay. I ran the Wad manager. installed ios16, ran the CIOS fix. then installed DVDX. and then upgraded to the latest IOS34 firmware and it works. all the instructions are included in this. i can say it works.

Thanks for the guide, just to let you know I bought my Wii on saturday and it came with 3.3E, this guide worked perfectly and have seen no adverse effects so far.

I too downloaded the 3.3u fix from pirate bay. I too ran the wadmanager, installe ios16 installed ios16 fix then i tried to install the CIOS fix with sonic the hedgehog, downloaded it it said succesfully installed and still launcher 0.3 wont work. please if you have any suggestion, xbox lenny especially since you seemed to have had the same problem.

Hey there is a new version of the Backup Launcher. Version 0.3 gamma was released over the weekend and you can find a copy of it at the bottom of my original post. You can also download it here -> Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma.
The only thing I have to add is that burning the backup ISO files can be a bit tricky. I’ve had mixed results with different types of media. I’ve gotten a DVD-R, a DVD+R and a DVD-RW all to work; however, DVD-R seems to work the best. I was only able to get one backup to work on a DVD-RW and I’d really suggest staying away from them all together. If you want to use a DVD+R you may need to do some booktype hacking in order for the Wii to read your DVD+R discs. I have a NEC dvdrw and had to apply a hacked firmware to it to be able to change my booktype settings in ImgBurn. With this hack I was able to burn DVD+R discs that appears to be DVD-ROM (store bought media) to many devices… including the Wii. Anyhow, if you’re using DVD+R media and not having much luck, google “booktype”. Some, albeit few, DVDR drives allow changing of the booktype out of the box. Most DVDRs need a firmware hack that is pretty easy to find via google and apply. As an added benefit, I can now burn DVD+R discs that should have a much higher compatibility rate in DVD players.

hey guys, its me again. after i succesfully (superficial) installed the HBC, i slowly recognized that im not able to install WADs… that sux. what i tried, it was in vain. now, i seem to have the solution, but im not able to get there. it seems like i need the gayfish cd or jaust its image, but unfortunately google is NOT my friend, cause i dont find it anywhere. so, could someone of u be so kind and either tell me wheter i need it, where to find it or even better send it to me ??? pretty pleeeaasee!!!! im gettin a little desperate, seriously

Thanks! This worked 100% perfect for my 3.3 system! My Prime 3 backup boots and runs but freezes often before I can actually get into the game… but I have it backed up on a DVD+R so I’m going to copy it to a DVD-R and see if that gives me better results.
I have just recently installed the HBC and I am about to install the wad manager, dvdx and geekos. I have read on other sites about this being detectable. Is this only for the VC games that u install without purchasing or can it detect the loader. My wife uses the wii browser a lot and does not want me to disable wiiconnect. Can I still install and run the backup manager and iso readers, and play backed up games.
Okay so I installed everything using the 3.3 fix as mentioned above. But i did not want to do a roll back because some of our games required an update. Now I cannot get dvdx to install. I have 3.3u

Thankyou for the very informative pos. Can confirm that this works on a PAL Wii System with 3.3u update. Not all games working and found dvd-r to be most reliable. Haven’t noticed any reduced loading time and have tested with both patched backups and straight rips which both work.
Hopefully u guys will keep updating the loader and adding to the compatiability list. Cheers again for some awesome coding.

do i install 3.3US?? or do i degrade to 3.2E with stardust or what not and go from there?

usually you should be able to install gamma.did you also install the required ios enhanced to the download? without, u cant start it. if youre not able to install any wad, u should look after the gayfish iso, also known as the ios16 i think…
AWESOME WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! I was able to burn using NERO, with a Maxell DVD+RW and the game works fine!!!!. I’m gonna test Dual layers next. Will let you guys know! One question does backup loader have region lock?

Just a question? what do you do for updates that come on a commercial disk? can you not play them? or must you back them and strip the update from them? will that render any possible future features added to games?

Hi I have installed the homebrew channel OK (via twilight princess), but when uploading the softmod, I have incurred a few issues, can anyone help?. I have created new folders in appl for DVDx, wad & Wiigator. Then I downloaded the softmod info (DVDX, wad, Wiigator) and I have altered file names to boot.elf/.dot, then I downloaded the C10536 rev5-64-v1042.wad into the wad folder. After reading various comments I have downloaded to computer, direct to SD card, but still get the same error when running the wad file, the error as follows:
Reading contents of wad….error ret -1
After reading the above update, I have since then downloaded the wiigator’s back_up launcher 0.3 Gamma. I copied the files to the SD card in the Appl folder, uploaded the Cios Installer, which sucessfuly installed, then run the Back_up launcher to start a copied game, Nothing happens except it requests for me to press button B, but no game. can anyone help????

Getting the Disk read error 324
and I am running 3.4, Homebrew is fine, tried to launch burned game with backupload and get the disk read error 324. I saw something about using Verbatim DVD-R is this true?
Pflav1 Hane you installed WAD Manager? You need to put the CIos installer in the apps folder not the wad folder
Mezar and trig did you install EVERYTHING with no errors?
@ Mezar/Trig: you need to install the DVD loader, and the current BuL with its seperate CIos. if you arent able to install properly, get your hands on the IOS16, also known as gayfishCD. then install the DVDloader again and choose the 245?, then should everything work!

Just wondering if there is anyway of getting the newly updated opera browser without updating to 3.4 and ruining my HBC install. I heard the 2 new dec updates kill HBC, but it has a updated browser in it.

@paul keep trying with different media. most people have the best luck with DVD-R media. I was able to burn a working DVD+R after installing a custom firmware on my dvd burner and changing my dvd+r booktype to dvd-rom. I wouldn’t really recommend the firmware mod though, just use DVD-R
@itsme I’m not sure, I’d be surprised if development has stopped but right now I haven’t tried anything that does not work. I’m guessing they are not in a hurry to push anything out since things work really well already.

Ok I’ve done everything right thus far from a good tutorial from youtube. Now we get to the tricky part. I successfully downgrade my to firmwire 3.2U. Now I try my hand on installing cIOS installer for the backup launcher………………….. It freezes on me. I try pressing A, and Nothing. I try pressing all the buttons (Not at the same time)……. Still nothing happens….. Well I restart my Wii and try using the backup channel anyway. I load it up and there a black screen that just say backup launcher 0.3 gamma, and a little green sign with a gecko on it.
So can someone here tell me what I did wrong? Also I’d like to point out that my gecko OS isn’t working after I downgraded the system and has the same problem as the backuplauncher.
Help anyone?

I have the Wii system version 3.3u. Once I successfully installed the Homebrew Channel, I just followed Atkins instructions (add the two apps, Backup_Launcher and cIOS_Installer to the /apps folder on your SD card. After that, run the cIOS_Installer and then launch a game with the Backup_Launcher), and about 85% of the ISOs work fine. I use TDK DVD-R disks.
I occasionally get the 002 blue screen error message immediately after launching some games, but I’m researching the fix for that.
I was wondering I have Ver 4.0U will I be able to softmod my wii?
i have 3.4U and i have homebrew channel and cIOS and BuL already but i get the 324 error. How can i get this to work? Im using DVD+R is thats that problem like Atkins said and ive already booktyped it. I really wanna play my backups so what can i do?>

This works like a charm. the CIOS installer gave out a code dump…but I tried my luck anyways and it worked. I have some cheap dvd-r from fry’s that never worked very well..but the wii seems to like them.
